Gardening 101 begins in our basement

Greetings from Neil and Gord starting our new venture in the basement.

As Neil's life has progressed, he has developed a passion for growing and gardening. As the summer season begins to come to a close and all items have been harvested outside, with the exception of grapes, sunflower, and carrots; we felt a need to continue a new era in gardening indoors. Since we already have high intensity lights set up for the tropical plants in the basement, we decided to utilize the space even more by planting a variety of vegetables we eat regularly, and some that will make your head turn!

List of things planted from seed today:

Garlic Chives, Bell Peppers, Spinach, Romaine Lettuce, Iceberg Lettuce, Cherry Tomatoes, Moneymaker Tomatoes, Beefsteak Tomatoes, Snap peas, Scallions, Yellow Onions, Purple Onions, and yes.......gigantic pumpkins!

Most things should start to germinate in 7 to 10 days.

We did place a lot of care and attention to the conditions needed to grow indoors:

Temperature: 24 to 25C during the day and 17 to 18C overnight

Light: Many 600 Watt Metal Halide lights that make it close to the sun blue sky spectrum

Soil: Only clean fresh potting soil with built in fertilizers

Air movement: Gentle breezes from two large fans

Air quality: Several Exhale CO2 bags that produce CO2 safely and naturally for vegetation, replacing what they will miss being indoors

Irrigation and feeding: A drip system is ready to go along with a built in inline feeding reservoir to feed all plants equally when seedlings are ready

We are so excited and hope you join us on our journey into the winter with our summer garden in the basement!

Indoor Basement Garden is growing crazy

Update:

See Neil posing with one of his favorite daycare puppies...Gabby!

Take a look at the indoor garden 10 days since seeding!

Added the base drip system as the plants are getting bigger faster than we expected.

Pumpkins, Tomatoes, Spinach, Lettuce, Peas, Onions, Chives are growing so fast; estimating about twice as fast when compared to planting outside in May.

We already had to put up netting supports for the peas as some are 6 to 7 inches tall already!

Additional plantings this past weekend are:

Corn and White Onions

Temperatures have been averaging a high of 26C during the day and dropping to 19C overnight. A perfect 7C range that all vegetables love and need to grow and flourish.

We are thinking about setting up loungers downstairs to catch some rays in our soothing environment which also includes a pond with tropical plants and dozens of other prized plants that offer beautiful flowers and intoxicating aromas.

Stay tuned for the next update to come as our garden continues to grow.
